Position: Teacher HS ELA - 10th grade
Description of Position: Candidates should be familiar with inquiry based learning and ideally understand and have worked w/in Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound and Performance Assessment Consortium or similar model. Teachers should have teaching portfolio which reflects deep understanding of differentiated assessment and instruction. Experience using Reading and Writing Workshop Model instruction is essential.
Applicant needs NY State certification in secondary English Language Arts and must be eligible to be hired by the NYC Department of Education. Position includes being a Crew advisory leader, teaching tenth grade English and developing Expeditionary Learning experiences and expeditions inside and outside the classroom.
Description of School: The Brooklyn School for Collaborative Studies (BCS) opened in 2001, first as a middle school and expanded to a full secondary school with grades 6-12 by Sept 2008. A heterogeneous and diverse community, our students come from all over Brooklyn. Intense staff collaboration are strengths of the school. Science Department: You would be joining a Science team focused on deepening assessment methods, creating engaging inquiry-based curriculum, and utilizing data-informed differentiated instruction with respect to mutually-developed learning targets. This science department currently includes expertise in Biological and Earth sciences, with strong links to Physical Education and Health. Some of our courses include: Fluid Earth; Science and Social Media; Ichthyology; Science and Art; and Human Evolution. We recently presented a master class on Exercise Physiology at both the National Science Teachers Association and the Expeditionary Learning national conferences. As a member of the Science team, you would have the opportunity to implement and design performance based assessments in place of preparing students for Regents Exams. English Department: You would be joining a team of three other veteran teachers (including a founding member of the school), who emphasize collaboration in decision making and curriculum design. Some of our courses include Baldwin Art and Soul, Bones and Butterflies (examining the intricacies of Hispaniola through literature), The Search for Identity, Violence in Literature and the school play. Department wide practices are well established, founded on sound pedagogical principles as supported by Expeditionary Learning Practices and performance based assessment, within which there is significant opportunity for innovation and creativity. Our waiver from Regents exams does not extend to ELA exam; however, the school community is committed to preparing students to present performance based assessments in addition to the English Language Arts Regents Exam.

Validus Preparatory Academy is a public high school located in the Bronx, New York. Validus is a part of the New York City Department of Education and is partnered with NYC Outward Bound Schhols. The school currently serves 360 students in grades 9-12. Validus is a college preparatory school with a health and fitness focus. In addition, as a part of our partnership with NYC Outward Bound Schools, all students are given the chance to attend a five day Outward Bound course in their freshman year. The Expeditionary Learning model is used in all courses to facilitate student ownership of learning and interdisciplinary study. All students and teachers take part in crew, a four year advisory program. Validus offers a breadth of extracurricular activities, including arts programming, varsity and junior varsity sports such as baseball, basketball, double dutch, and wrestling, as well as clubs including debate, environmental club, and GSA. Validus Prep uses mastery based grading to assess students. We are committed to providing students with a postive school culture and inquiry-based learning experiences.
