    Harlem Times Visits New College Access Room

    Harlem Times' reporter Katherine Deer paid a visit to our Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School's new College Access Room (CAR), which was co-funded by school partners Capital One Bank and Heart of America Foundation. The CAR will bolster the school's college readiness programs, which serve a population in which 100% are eligible for free or reduced lunch and 100% of graduating seniors were accepted to college.

    Forbes' released its Top 5 list of innovators working to "change the US for the better." The magazine placed Expeditionary Learning President Scott Hartl on its list for his role in changing the face of education. According to Forbes, "Expeditionary Learning is now poised to become the preeminent curriculum developer and provider of professional development training for teachers looking to meet [Common Core] standards."

    Epoch Times Celebrates School's Community Garden Program

    The Epoch Times reports on our Expeditionary Learning School for Community Leaders' gardening program, which brings real-world learning to teachers' science projects. The garden's success has led to a grant from Cornell University to grow plants year-round, as well as funding from the Citizens Committee for New York City.

    Chief Advancement Officer Awarded Outward Bound USA's Joshua Miner Award

    Outward Bound USA has awarded Paola Vita, Chief Advancement Officer of NYC Outward Bound Schools, its prestigious Joshua Miner Award. The award is the highest honor that Outward Bound USA can bestow upon a staff member from across its vast national network of Outward Bound centers. Vita shares the award with Peals Wrobel, a longtime instructor at Hurricane Island.

    Partners Capital One Bank & Heart of America Foundation Build New College Access Room at WHEELS

    October 19, 2012

    Our Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School has partnered with Capital One Bank and the Heart of America Foundation to build a new College Access Room, which will house the school's new College Counselor and Alumni Coordinator. The Room also houses a library of college readiness and financial literacy books, and students will use the space to research careers, study for entrance exams, and complete college and financial aid applications as they pursue higher education.

This 5-day wilderness challenge teaches students the values of perseverance, resilience, cooperation, initiative, communication and more.     Class of 2012 Earns $5.2 Million in Scholarships

    Our Brooklyn School for Collaborative Studies’ class of 2012 has earned over $5.2 million dollars in college scholarships and grants, which includes 41 full-tuition scholarships. The 81 students who comprise the class also enjoyed a 100% college acceptance rate and will be attending colleges such as Cornell, Bard, Colby, DePauw, FIT, Colgate and Sarah Lawrence.

The Day memorializes the school's namesake, national education reformer and longtime NYC Outward Bound Schools' board member Gaynor McCown.
