Our Kurt Hahn Expeditionary Learning School is in the New York Times for their students' involvement in the City Council's participatory budgeting process, which garnered the school and its 45th district $450,000 to dramatically increase safety by placing lights in the district’s parks and in the field behind the school's Tilden Educational Campus in East Flatbush, Brooklyn.
Our Core Values
- Our schools are grounded in a culture of high expectations & high achievement.
- We strive to bring out the best in every student.
- We provide our students with safe, inclusive & supportive learning environments.
Our core values animate our work. Everything we do as an organization is shaped and guided by these core values, which derive from the beliefs of Outward Bound's founder Kurt Hahn about the nature of teaching and learning and the power of education to transform lives. How these values get expressed and come alive in our work is described in a companion document, "Outward Bound's Educational Framework."
High Achievement for All
We believe that all people are capable of doing great things when they are challenged and supported appropriately.
Community
We believe that learning happens best in a community that actively encourages and practices respect, empathy, safety, inclusion and diversity.
Character
We believe that the development of character is as important as the development of intellect, and that the two go hand in hand.
"I regard it as the foremost task of education to insure the survival of these qualities: an enterprising curiosity, an undefeatable spirit, tenacity in pursuit, readiness for sensible self denial, and above all, compassion."
—Kurt Hahn, Founder, Outward Bound
