Paired Youth Adult Courses

  • Our programs use NYC as a classroom.
  • Our programs foster a strong sense of community.
  • Our programs promote trusting & caring student/adult relationships.

Overview

These unique courses bring together students and adults for shared adventure and learning that breaks down age, racial, and cultural barriers. Teachers, parents, or corporate volunteers are paired with middle and high school students for a special NYC-based learning experience that includes adventure, cultural exploration and/or service.  The courses are facilitated to create dialogue and understanding between the youth and adult participants.  They come to see each other as valuable resources and teachers.

Typical Learning Targets

  • I can try new challenges and expand my comfort zone
  • I can get to know someone who I would not normally meet, and begin to develop a better understanding of his or her world
  • I can communicate effectively by offering my own ideas and listening to the ideas of others
  • I can reflect on my experiences and think critically about how it applies to my everyday life.
  • I can make a plan for next steps with my partner, such as keeping in touch, compiling journal notes, or sharing photos

CLIENT SPOTLIGHT: NYC Outward Bound Board Invitational

This is what we accomplished:

  • We provided participants with a short, vivid taste of Outward Bound in an urban context and gave them a first-hand sense of how Outward Bound can transform lives.
  • We provided adult participants with the opportunity to make a positive connection with the urban youth on the course and vice-versa. Participants had the experience of working in a team and supporting each other.
  • We gave participants the opportunity to take part in a unique adventure that took place entirely in NYC. They felt like they had experienced the City in an entirely new way.
