Overview

Working with your agenda, these programs help groups recognize and discuss their pertinent issues, explore challenges, set goals, and give one another meaningful feedback. New York City Outward Bound retreats include components such as high and low challenge courses, hiking, canoeing, large group games, and orienteering.  We deliver these programs at several different facilities in upstate New York and New Jersey.  The accommodations are usually simple and rustic, and the time away in a natural setting enhances focus and reflection. Retreats typically take place over several days.

Typical Learning Targets

  • I can be a good leader by offering my own ideas and listening respectfully to the ideas of others during group challenges
  • I can develop trust with my peers
  • I can reflect on my experiences and think critically about how they apply to my life at school and home

CLIENT SPOTLIGHT: HUMANITIES PREP SENIOR RETREAT

“Seniors develop their leadership capacity and articulate how they can contribute to leading the school.

Seniors reflect on their expectations of college and adult life beyond, how it will be different and how they can prepare for that. Seniors feel renewed, inspired and re-committed to return to school to finish work on graduation products, college applications and post-high school plans.”

Chin-a Panaccione, Teacher, Humanities Prep

CLIENT SPOTLIGHT: Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School  8TH GRADE GRADUATION RETREAT

“This retreat is meant to be a reward for a year of hard work. We also feel that our students need to continue to practice showing each other respect, responding in a gentle way to feedback, persevering when experiences are difficult, and supporting each other. We would like our kids to have some good, old-fashioned fun. At the same time, we want to push
them to be responsible and caring community members. Requested Activities: We want to do high-ropes and low-ropes activities. Hiking or canoeing would also be fantastic (Are those even options?). We organized a school talent show and dance for the evening last year, too.”

Erica Swenson, 8th grade team leader and Social Studies teacher, Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School
