Internships
Internship Program
The junior year BCS Internship Program places students alongside of professional mentors in businesses, government agencies and non-profit organizations for an entire semester. The program is choice-driven – fueled by the professional interests or curiosities of our students which accounts for the program’s high success rate: on average 94% of students complete in good standing. It has also resulted in array of unique collaborations, from a SOHO designer to an equestrian-based therapy program in Brooklyn for adults with disabilities.
The internship culminates with the BCS Model Job Fair, where site supervisors evaluate the interns at as they represent their organizations and conduct mock interviews with their 10th grade classmates—the future interns of our program.
The BCS Internship Program is the anchor in a three-year arc to prepare our students as professionals and participants in the economic mainstream.
Sophomore Year: All students explore internship opportunities and participate in numerous mock interviews during the bi-annual BCS Model Job Fair.
Junior Year: All students interview for an internship, work over 65 hours, and complete resumes and written reflections about work and leading a meaningful life.
Summer of Junior Year: The BCS Full-Employment Summer Initiative, a student-run employment agency, helps juniors parlay their work experience into paid summer jobs.
Senior Year: All students take Financial Literacy 101, with Stephen Simmons, where they investigate the question: “How might I become financially responsible immediately?” Issues of credit, renting, college debt, salary and wage acuity are also addressed.
