The James Baldwin School was opened in 2005 through a collaboration between New York City Outward Bound, Expeditionary Learning Schools, the Coalition of Essential Schools (CES) and our CES Mentor School, Humanities Preparatory Academy, or Prep. We are a replication of the essential elements of Prep, where our founding teachers, co-directors, students and families all worked together for many years – in some cases, since 1997.
