The James Baldwin School is a small, community-minded, college preparatory public school serving 9-12 grade transfer students from across the City. It is our mission to provide a philosophical and practical education for all students, an education that features creativity and inquiry, encourages habitual reading and productivity, as well as self-reflection and meaningful thought. This mission can best be accomplished in a school that is a democratic community.
We agree with James Baldwin that with self-awareness, love and courage, adults and young people can join together to “make America what America must become” – a more democratic and just society.
“It is your responsibility to change society if you think of yourself as an educated person.”
—James Baldwin
