New York City Outward Bound: Our Lead Partner
WHEELS is operated by New York City Outward Bound in partnership with the NYC Department of Education. New York City Outward Bound supports a growing network of Expeditionary Learning Schools in NYC and brings demanding academics, community and character to public schools in all five boroughs. What is Expeditionary Learning?
WHEELS is part of a network of over 150 Expeditionary Learning schools across the country that are based on the educational principles of Outward Bound. Expeditionary Learning schools deliver demanding academics through “learning expeditions”, which are hands-on, real-world projects that meet state and district standards. These projects inspire students to solve actual problems through original research and with the help of experts, who guide the process. They also provide intensive and individualized support in the development of student character and good citizenship, and in the building of a positive school culture. WHEELS is also very fortunate to have two corporate partners: Capital One and Maverick Capital. Both provide the school with generous financial support to help support the school's work with NYC Outward Bound and in addition Capital One employees provide in-kind support to the school in a myriad of ways. In addition we partner with Blue Engine which provides high-dose tutoring to students to accelerate student achievement.
