Overview
The Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School (WHEELS) is a small 6-12th grade Expeditionary Learning School, located in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan.
Mission
At Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School (WHEELS), our mission is to work with families to prepare each 6th –12th grade student academically, emotionally, intellectually and socially to succeed in a college of her/his choice and beyond. Our goal is to be a safe, secure and nurturing environment for adolescents, a place where high expectations, excellent academic practices and highly-qualified faculty provide differentiated instruction to every learner. Our school community provides each student with the academic rigor and preparation necessary to attend college and to practice the skills necessary for effective participation in our democratic society.
History
WHEELS opened in the fall of 2006 as a new school in Community School District (CSD) 6, the most over-crowded school district in New York City. WHEELS currently enrolls 525 6th-11th grade students and will have its first graduating class in 2012.
