The Kurt Hahn Expeditionary Learning School (the Kurt Hahn School)—opening September, 2007—is a grades 6-12 college preparatory school focused on civic leadership. Our goal is to arm students with the knowledge, skills and character necessary to serve as informed, thoughtful and courageous civic leaders in their own communities and beyond. The Kurt Hahn School emphasizes the interdisciplinary, in-depth study of compelling topics that develop students’ abilities to solve problems creatively and think critically. Students at the Kurt Hahn School will enroll in a challenging standards-based curriculum that readies them for successful graduation from 4-year colleges.
A week-long wilderness orientation introduces students to the role of adventure, cooperation and challenge in the Kurt Hahn School. Students also take advantage of a large range of out-of-school experiences through which they explore interests and acquire the tools necessary to become life-long learners. Experienced and outstanding teachers support all students in their drive to achieve through smaller academic classes, advisories (called crews), and constant attention to students’ character development as leaders. This attention takes many forms, from a civics-focused, project-based leadership curriculum in crew to assessment reports that provide information on both character and academic progress. The Kurt Hahn School sees families as essential partners in their children’s education and looks to them for support and collaboration in helping students grow into our democracy’s next generation of civic leaders.
Our school is named for visionary educator Kurt Hahn, founder of several innovative educational organizations including Outward Bound and the United World Colleges. Hahn believed that young people will rise to almost any challenge, and that educational experiences can guide them to make the right choices in even the most difficult circumstances. His commitment to youth as well as his brave and principled stand against Hitler and the Nazis, which resulted in his exile from his native Germany, make him an ideal namesake for a school which seeks to impel passionate young people to stand up and become informed, thoughtful and courageous civic leaders.
