Overview
We are full partners in seven small, public
high schools in New York City, along with the City’s
Department of Education. With support from the Bill and Melinda
Gates Foundation and others, we are building a network of
college-preparatory schools where the curriculum is challenging,
the lessons clearly relate to our students’ lives,
and an adult advisor for every 12-15 students challenges
and supports them to achieve.
All of our new schools are based on the highly successful,
national Expeditionary Learning™ model, which shapes
their curriculum, culture and structure. While each school
is unique, all share common features. Outward Bound sets
high expectations of all who enroll, and supports students
in meeting stretch goals. The curriculum emphasizes active
learning and challenges students to prepare for college and
successful life choices. We value character development as
much as academics.
Our students benefit from a rigorous academic curriculum,
small classes and longer class periods; membership in a "crew" (advisory
program) until graduation; active, real-world learning;
service projects, and adventures outside the classroom.
Incoming students enjoy a unique, week-long backpacking
orientation. Attendance is high in Expeditionary Learning
schools, our students show significant improvement in literacy,
and both students and teachers tend to stay with us. Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound schools are known to build courage, character, teamwork and community.
