WHEELS is an Expeditionary Learning school created to serve students from grades 6 through 12. We opened in September 2006 with our first 6th and 7th grade classes. As new classes come in every year, we will eventually serve students in Upper Manhattan through middle and high school, with preference given to neighborhood residents.

Like every Expeditionary Learning school, we emphasize academic achievement, community and character development. Our curriculum is challenging, based on project learning focused on real-world issues. Every student becomes part of a supportive crew that stays together throughout a student’s years at WHEELS, emphasizing service to one another, our school and our community. The focus is squarely on preparation for college and career, which is reinforced through fieldwork, job shadowing and paid internships during the high school years. Internship wages will be deposited into a 529 college savings account.
