Emmy Award-Winning Series Highlights Our Crew Program >

ABC-7’s Protect Our Children series explores “crew,” a student advisory and community-building structure that we use in all of our schools, through the lens of students’ affected by Hurricane Sandy. The series features students and principals from two of our schools most affected by the storm: Channel View School for Research and Expeditionary Learning School for Community Leaders. The Protect Our Children series has aired annually for sixteen years and has garnered 4 Emmy’s.

9 Schools Hold Graduation & Moving-Up Ceremonies >

Nine of our public schools hold graduation and moving-up ceremonies this week for graduating seniors at our high schools and advancing 8th-graders at our middle schools. Congratulations to all, and special recognition to WHEELS for graduating its first senior class and for securing keynote speaker Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator and star of Broadway hit In the Heights, and a native and resident of the school’s neighborhood.

Channel View School Receives $250K Grant >

Our Channel View School for Research has been selected as one of 40 NYC public schools to receive a $250,000 “Expanded Success Initiative” grant, which will assist in preparing young men for college. The grant is connected to Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Young Men’s Initiative.

$1.2 Million Raised at 25th Anniversary Gala >

NYC Outward Bound Schools reached its $1.2 million dollar fundraising goal for its annual gala on June 12. The gala honored the organization’s board chairs, past and present, and Soledad O’Brien of CNN served as Master of Ceremonies at the Plaza Hotel.

Gaynor McCown Excellence in Teaching Award Winner >

NYC Outward Bound Schools has awarded our 2012 Gaynor McCown Excellence in Teaching Award to 8th-grade social studies teacher Tina Marra of our Marsh Avenue Expeditionary Learning School. The award will be presented at our 25th Anniversary Gala on June 12 at the Plaza Hotel.
