Wall Street Journal Announces Our College March >

The Wall Street Journal announces our First Annual 5-Borough College Application march, which happens December 14 at 12pm at every high school in our network. During the march, seniors will march their college applications to their local post office or mail truck in order to meet early application deadlines.

WHEELS’ Lands $65,000 College-Access Grant >

Our Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School has received $65,000 in funding from its partner Capital One Bank and the Heart of American Foundation for its new College Access Room, which will house a new college counselor, computers, and a library devoted to financial literarcy and college preparation. In 2012, 100% of the school’s first graduating class gained college admission.

Author Paul Tough visited NYC Outward Bound Schools’ board members and principals to discuss the role of character in our schools. Tough is the author of the acclaimed book “How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity and the Hidden Power of Character.”

BCS Home to 9th Posse Scholar >

Two students from our Brooklyn School for Collaborative Studies (BCS) have been named Posse Scholars, which awards recipients from under-served backgrounds full-tuition, four-year scholarships plus student support services. BCS student Luis Hernandez will be attending the University of Southern California and Tiye Williams-Kirtley will be attending Lawrence University. BCS has produced 9 Posse Scholars in the last three years, an exceptionally high number particularly for a school of its size.

Harlem Times Visits New College Access Room >

Harlem Times’ reporter Katherine Deer paid a visit to our Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School’s new College Access Room (CAR), which was co-funded by school partners Capital One Bank and Heart of America Foundation. The CAR will bolster the school’s college readiness programs, which serve a population in which 100% are eligible for free or reduced lunch and 100% of graduating seniors were accepted to college.

Forbes’ Top 5 List Includes Expeditionary Learning President >

Forbes’ released its Top 5 list of innovators working to “change the US for the better.” The magazine placed Expeditionary Learning President Scott Hartl on its list for his role in changing the face of education. According to Forbes, “Expeditionary Learning is now poised to become the preeminent curriculum developer and provider of professional development training for teachers looking to meet [Common Core] standards.”

Epoch Times Celebrates School’s Community Garden Program >

The Epoch Times reports on our Expeditionary Learning School for Community Leaders’ gardening program, which brings real-world learning to teachers’ science projects. The garden’s success has led to a grant from Cornell University to grow plants year-round, as well as funding from the Citizens Committee for New York City.

Channel View School Relocated After Hurricane Sandy >

Our Rockaway Beach-based Channel View School for Research has been hard-hit by Hurricane Sandy, and has been relocated to the Franklin K. Lane High School campus until the school is safe to return to.
