On Wednesday, May 19, the NYC Outward Bound Schools community gathered virtually to celebrate its annual fundraising Gala. This year, NYC Outward Bound honored three champions of educational equity in New York — Richard Stopol, founding CEO, who is retiring from the organization after 33 years of unparalleled leadership; Dr. Lester Young, Jr., Chancellor of the New York Board of Regents, who received the organization’s Educational Leadership Award; and Hon. Mark Treyger, NYC Council Member and Chair of the Education Committee, who received the organization’s Expeditioner’s Award. In lieu of awarding one teacher with the annual Gaynor McCown Excellence in Teaching Award, NYC Outward Bound Schools chose to honor its entire network of educators this year, for their compassionate and vigilant response to students’ needs during the pandemic.

Thank you to all of our Gala Chairs, Vice Chairs and supporters who helped us raise $990,000 in support of critical services for our school communities — from guidance and support to seniors navigating the college application process, to resources that will help address students’ social-emotional needs as they re-acclimate to in-person learning. And thank you to all who attended, helping us to celebrate our honorees and educators!
