Highlighting the release of his new book, President Emeritus Richard Stopol & CEO Laurie Adams discuss the Outward Bound approach to education
NYC Outward Bound Schools’ founding CEO, Richard Stopol, and current CEO, Laurie Adams, were recently interviewed on the Innovations in Education podcast with David Adams, CEO of The Urban Assembly and a social-emotional learning expert.
Adams’s podcast encourages dialogue with people who have “made things work” in public education. In this latest episode, Richard reflects on lessons learned throughout his decades of leadership at NYC Outward Bound Schools and how they can be applied in more schools and in society at large. These lessons, among other stories and personal essays, comprise Richard’s new book, Inward & Outward: Reflections on Education, Democracy and the Human Spirit, which was published in August.
Joining Richard and David in the discussion is Laurie Adams, who details NYC Outward Bound’s approach to adventurous learning, as well as several other guiding philosophies — Crew Not Passengers, meaningful challenge with support, and the intertwining of social-emotional learning with academics — as necessary components of a successful education ecosystem.
The book in one word? Optimistic. “Whenever I encounter young people, certainly in our schools, I feel tremendously hopeful,” says Richard.
