- Rofiat, 2019 Kim Rutherford Scholarship Recipient
Each year, we recognize one student with the Kim Rutherford Scholarship, named for the late Kim Rutherford, who worked at NYC Outward Bound Schools. The scholarship, which helps cover first-year college costs, acknowledges a senior who is civic-minded, compassionate and bold, consistently gives their best effort, and has a high level of integrity, the characteristics demonstrated by Kim herself.
This year, we are thrilled to recognize Rofiat, a senior at The Kurt Hahn School. Rofiat, who immigrated from Nigeria as a 10th grader, has distinguished herself as a passionate student leader and activist at her school.
As a member of Kurt Hahn’s debate team and the founder of its Climate Club, Rofiat has had the opportunity to visit other schools and organizations as a representative of Kurt Hahn. Through these experiences, she has developed incredible maturity and confidence, without losing the humility and compassion that make her stand out from her peers.
Her commitment to raising awareness about climate change, in particular, has led her to opportunities with the Wild Center and the UN International School. In addition, she was accepted to a summer college course at Columbia University where she was able to hone her research skills and further develop her social intelligence.
Next year, Rofiat will be studying nursing at college, a field that complements her sensitivity, kindness, and caring nature.
Congratulations Rofiat! You make us so proud!
