Channel View Achieves EL Education Credential for Excellence in Character and Scholarship

Channel View, our Network School in Far Rockaway, Queens, received EL Education’s national credential for their exemplary practice. There are only 41 schools nationally that have achieved this level of practice including three others in our Network: MELS, MAELS, and Leaders.

Channel View, along with all of our Network Schools, utilize the nationally-recognized EL Education model, which has its roots in Outward Bound.

In 2014 EL Education began recognizing schools that demonstrated high levels of implementation and achievement with a credential. EL Education defines achievement as mastery in the following three areas, all of which are powerfully associated with success in college and career:

  1. Mastery of Knowledge and Skills. Students show evidence of proficiency and deep understanding of a subject, critical thinking, the ability to communicate clearly, and application of their learning. Performance on state assessments over a period of several years is one measure.
  2. Character. EL Education schools establish consistent school-wide “Habits of Scholarship” (such as perseverance and responsibility), which are then tracked by students and teachers to provide evidence of growth over time.
  3. High-Quality Student Work. Schools present evidence showing the quality, depth, and authenticity of student work during the school’s multi-year partnership with EL Education.

Our goal is for all of our schools to either attain credentialed status or be well on the pathway to being credentialed by June 2020.

Congratulations to principal Denise Harper Richardson and everyone in the Channel View community for earning this recognition and for demonstrating what educational excellence can look like.
