We are thrilled to announce that NYC Outward Bound Schools’ President & CEO Richard Stopol has been named this year’s Kurt Hahn Award recipient, an annual award presented by Outward Bound USA.

Named in honor of Outward Bound’s founder, the Kurt Hahn Award is the organization’s highest honor. It is presented annually to a person who exemplifies outstanding service to Outward Bound’s mission to change lives through challenge and discovery and create a more resilient and compassionate world.

Richard has dedicated his entire professional life to public service and, more specifically, to serving individuals from underserved communities. Richard is always looking for ways for NYC Outward Bound Schools to serve students even better. “We have, from the beginning, stood for an educational approach that blends individual best effort with concern and support for others,” Richard has written, “and treats learning not as an abstract exercise but as a concrete one grounded in genuine experience from which knowledge and skills are acquired and applied in real world learning contexts.”

The wide and positive recognition of the strength and innovations of NYC Outward Bound Schools are a testament to Richard’s outstanding dedication and leadership and his adoption, in a tangible and highly visible way, of Kurt Hahn’s philosophy and approach to education.

Previous recipients include HRH Prince Philip, activist and politician Sargent Shriver, The New York Times Company Chairman Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., and EL Education founder Greg Farrell.

Please join us in congratulating Richard on this incredible and deserved recognition and thanking him for his commitment to the philosophy of Outward Bound.
