The Lasting Legacy of our Founding CEO
For the past 34 years, President & CEO Richard Stopol has led NYC Outward Bound Schools through periods of tremendous growth and change — from its founding in 1987 to become an organization that has enabled more than 200,000 of NYC’s young people to learn and put into practice the central lesson Outward Bound teaches: that with right mix of challenge and support, every individual can achieve far more than they thought possible.
As Richard prepares to retire in January 2022, we are creating the Stopol Scholars Fund to help financially support two deserving students from two of our network schools each year. We believe that there is no better way to honor and remember the indelible mark Richard has left on the organization than by supporting the students he holds so dear.
It has been the joy of a lifetime to know that our work has had, and continues to have, such a profound impact on so many schools and so many students.
