Our annual Gala will take place on Monday, May 12, and honor Jeffrey R. Gural, Chairman and Principal, GFP Real Estate, and Gifford Miller, Chair of the Board of Directors, for their longtime commitments to NYC Outward Bound Schools and educational excellence.

Join us for cocktails, followed by dinner and an engaging, student-led program at the dynamic Tribeca Rooftop. The evening will also include the presentation of the R. Gaynor McCown Excellence in Teaching Award to a deserving educator within our network. Funds raised help ensure that we can continue our work to engage students in equitable, immersive and joyful learning experiences.

Meet our 2025 Honorees

Jeffrey R. Gural

Chairman and Principal, GFP Real Estate

 

Jeffrey Gural is Chairman of GFP Real Estate LLC. GFP Real Estate LLC has an ownership interest in 41 properties, almost all of which are located in Manhattan. Mr. Gural, along with his son, Eric Gural and nephew, Brian Steinwurtzel are responsible for all future acquisitions and the managing and leasing of the 10 million square feet that they have an ownership interest in.

Mr. Gural joined Newmark Knight Frank in 1972, and served as Chairman until 2017, after which he became Chairman Emeritus. Prior to that, Mr. Gural was a member of the staff of Diesel Construction Co., for approximately six years where he was responsible for the supervision and construction of more than one million square feet of new office space in such notable buildings as 437 Madison Avenue and 645 Madison Avenue.

Mr. Gural is a member of the Executive Committee of The Real Estate Board of New York; Former President of the enCourage Kids Foundation; Chairman of “I Have a Dream Foundation – NY” and Co-Sponsor of the Chelsea-Elliot “I Have a Dream” Project; former Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Times Square Alliance; member of the Board of Trustees of The New School; Chair of the Board of Governors for Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts; Former Chairman of the Board of Directors for Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York; Vice President of The Broadway Association; member of the Board of Directors of the Museum at Eldridge Street; member of the Board of Directors of the Statue of Liberty Foundation; member of the Board of the Settlement Housing Fund; member of the Board of Directors of New York City Outward Bound Schools; member of the NYC Board of Directors for the March of Dimes and President of The Realty Foundation of New York. Mr. Gural is a member of the UJA-Federation, Executive Committee. Both Jeff and his father, Aaron Gural, were honored at the organization’s 1995 Annual Luncheon.

As a sideline, Mr. Gural is a major owner and breeder of Standardbred racehorses and has two farms in Upstate New York and Northern Pennsylvania. Mr. Gural owns a casino in Upstate New York, Tioga Downs and a racino at Vernon Downs. Mr. Gural is also Managing Partner of New Meadowlands Racetrack LLC., which is the current lessee and operator of the New Meadowlands Racetrack. The Meadowlands recently opened a new $120 Million grandstand which is a state-of-the-art new facility.

Mr. Gural is a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, with a degree in Civil Engineering. He is married, has three grown children, five grandchildren and resides in Manhattan.

Gifford Miller

Chair, Board of Directors, NYC Outward Bound Schools

 

After more than a decade at the highest levels of New York City government, culminating in four years as Speaker of the New York City Council, Mr. Miller co-founded Signature Urban Properties in 2007 to pursue transformational development in transitional urban areas. In both capacities, Mr. Miller specialized in leading complex projects to fruition as the driving force behind efforts as diverse as the creation of the High Line and, more recently, the construction of 2000 units of affordable housing in transitional neighborhoods in the Bronx.

Since 2021, Mr. Miller has turned his attention to sourcing and investing in real estate, hospitality, and football opportunities in Portugal. Mr. Miller currently serves as the Chairman of Atlético CP, a third division football club located in the heart of Lisbon.

Mr. Miller is also extremely active as a non-profit leader, chairing NYC Outward Bound Schools and the Center for an Urban Future, as well as serving on the Executive Committee of the Friends of the High Line.

The R. Gaynor McCown Excellence in Teaching Award

The Gaynor McCown Award was established to honor the memory of R. Gaynor McCown, a former public school teacher, longtime Board member of NYC Outward Bound Schools, Executive Director of the Teaching Commission, and champion of the profession of teaching. The Award recognizes a teacher or other staff member from NYC Outward Bound Schools’ network of schools who exemplifies the qualities that Gaynor herself exhibited as a teacher and that she sought to nurture and support in others.

Rachel Demalderis

Special Education English Teacher and Instructional Coach at MELS

Rachel Demalderis is a Special Education English teacher and Instructional Coach at the Metropolitan Expeditionary Learning School (MELS), a NYC Outward Bound School in Queens. In her 11 years at MELS, Rachel has also served as a Special Education Coordinator, Crew Team Leader, and Track & Field Coach. She is known for her commitment to inclusive instruction, student empowerment, and interdisciplinary learning — from leading projects on food justice to helping students run a community farmstand. Rachel helped bring a partnership with IncludeNYC to MELS, offering self-advocacy workshops for students with IEPs. A passionate advocate for equity, she mentors new teachers and helps guide schoolwide systems that support all learners.
