Zip code should never determine a child’s access to a high-quality education.

By supporting NYC Outward Bound Schools, you are ensuring that students across New York City have access to a transformative education.

Your gift will support NYC students living in some of the city’s most educationally under-resourced communities by providing them with more opportunities to realize and name their dreams, exercise their genius, learn from their failures, and use their voices to spark positive social change in the world.

Your contribution helps over 16,000 students a year discover the truth of Outward Bound founder Kurt Hahn’s words: “There is more in us than we know. If we can be made to see it, perhaps for the rest of our lives, we will be unwilling to settle for less.”

We are unwilling to settle for less for NYC students and their schools. By donating to NYC Outward Bound Schools, you can transform NYC’s public schools, and change the lives of the students we serve.

Give by Donor-Advised Fund

You can recommend a gift to NYC Outward Bound Schools through your donor-advised fund (DAF).

If you currently have a donor-advised fund through Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, BNY Mellon Charitable or Greater Kansas City Community Foundation, you may use DAFDirect.

If you have a donor-advised fund with a different entity, here is the information you will need:

  • Organization Name: NYC Outward Bound Schools
  • Federal Tax ID #:13-3471084
  • Address: 29-46 Northern Boulevard Long Island City, NY 11101

In order to acknowledge your generous gift please email the donor and/or fund name and address along with the gift amount to Beth Gerbe, Director of Development, at [email protected].

What is a donor-advised fund?

A donor-advised fund allows donors to make a charitable contribution, receive an immediate tax benefit and then recommend grants from the fund over time. An easy way to think about a donor-advised fund is that it is like a charitable savings account: a donor contributes to the fund as frequently as they like and then recommends grants to their favorite charity when they are ready. Donor advised funds can be established with a number of entities, including community foundations and financial services companies. Your financial advisor can help you learn how to set up a donor-advised fund.

What are the main advantages?

  • Simplicity: the donor-advised fund sponsor handles all record-keeping, disbursements, and tax receipts.
  • Flexibility: timing of your tax deduction can be separate from your charitable decision-making.
  • Tax-efficiency: Contributions are tax-deductible and any investment growth in the fund is tax-free. It is also easy to donate long-term appreciated securities, eliminating capital gains taxes.
  • Family legacy: it is a powerful way to build or continue a tradition of family philanthropy.
  • No transaction fees: once approved, 100% of your recommended grant goes to the NYC Outward Bound Schools.

Give By Wire or Stock Transfer

We are happy to accept contributions via wire transfer or stock donation. To inquire about the process, please contact Director of Development Beth Gerbe at (929) 233-7831.

Tax-Free IRA Gift (Qualified Charitable Distribution)

If you are 70½ years old or older, you can take advantage of a simple way to benefit NYC Outward Bound Schools and receive tax benefits in return. You can give up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to a qualified charity such as ours without having to pay income taxes on the money. This popular gift option is commonly called the IRA charitable rollover, but you may also see it referred to as a qualified charitable distribution, or QCD for short. Distributions must be made directly from a traditional IRA account by your IRA administrator to NYC Outward Bound Schools.

This law no longer has an expiration date so you are free to make annual gifts to our organization this year and well into the future.

Make a Planned Gift

There are many flexible planned giving options that can benefit both your financial and philanthropic goals:

  • Bequests from Your Will: By including a bequest provision to NYC Outward Bound Schools in your will, you can support us while retaining control of your assets during your lifetime.
  • Charitable Lead Trust: Allows you to pass wealth to your children or grandchildren with minimized or no taxation. The trust provides payments to NYC Outward Bound Schools for a period that you determine. When the trust expires, the principal is returned to you or transferred to your heirs, possibly with significant tax savings.
  • Charitable Remainder Trust: May be funded with cash or appreciated assets such as securities, real estate or other property. You and other beneficiaries can receive income for life or for a set number of years. You receive an immediate charitable income tax deduction, immediate income and relief from tax on capital gain. When the trust expires, the assets remaining in the trust go towards supporting the mission of NYC Outward Bound Schools.
  • Life Insurance: A gift of life insurance that you no longer need can be an easy way for you to provide generous support. You can either transfer a policy that is paid up or has substantial cash value to NYC Outward Bound Schools or designate NYC Outward Bound Schools as a beneficiary of your policy.
  • Retirement Assets: By naming NYC Outward Bound Schools as a beneficiary of your retirement assets (e.g., IRA, 401(k), or other qualified retirement accounts), you may save your estate from paying income and estate taxes on those assets.
