Zip code should never determine a child’s access to a high quality education.

By supporting NYC Outward Bound Schools, you are ensuring that students across New York City have access to a transformative education.

Your gift will better the odds for NYC students living in some of the city’s most educationally underserved communities, and provide them with the opportunities to succeed, the courage to fail, and the support they need to reach their fullest potential.

Your contribution helps over 10,000 students a year discover the truth of Outward Bound founder Kurt Hahn’s words: “There is more in us than we know. If we can be made to see it, perhaps for the rest of our lives, we will be unwilling to settle for less.”

We are unwilling to settle for less for NYC students and their schools. By donating to NYC Outward Bound Schools, you can transform NYC’s public schools, and change the lives of the students we serve.

  • Organization Name: NYC Outward Bound Schools
  • Federal Tax ID #:13-3471084

In order to acknowledge your generous gift please email the donor and/or fund name and address along with the gift amount to Beth Gerbe, Director of Development, at [email protected].

What is a donor-advised fund?

A donor-advised fund allows donors to make a charitable contribution, receive an immediate tax benefit and then recommend grants from the fund over time. An easy way to think about a donor-advised fund is that it is like a charitable savings account: a donor contributes to the fund as frequently as they like and then recommends grants to their favorite charity when they are ready. Donor advised funds can be established with a number of entities, including community foundations and financial services companies. Your financial advisor can help you learn how to set up a donor-advised fund.

What are the main advantages?

  • Simplicity: the donor-advised fund sponsor handles all record-keeping, disbursements, and tax receipts.
  • Flexibility: timing of your tax deduction can be separate from your charitable decision-making.
  • Tax-efficiency: Contributions are tax-deductible and any investment growth in the fund is tax-free. It is also easy to donate long-term appreciated securities, eliminating capital gains taxes.
  • Family legacy: it is a powerful way to build or continue a tradition of family philanthropy.
  • No transaction fees: once approved, 100% of your recommended grant goes to the NYC Outward Bound Schools.

Make a Planned Gift

There are many flexible planned giving options that can benefit both your financial and philanthropic goals:

  • Bequests from Your Will: By including a bequest provision to NYC Outward Bound Schools in your will, you can support us while retaining control of your assets during your lifetime.
  • Charitable Trusts or Gift Annuities: The IRS allows and encourages these creative plans that can stretch your giving ability. Your gift to NYC Outward Bound Schools goes into an account that pays income to you and/or other beneficiaries for life. When there are no remaining beneficiaries, the balance in the gift account is paid over to us for the purposes that you specified when you set up your gift.
  • Life Insurance: A gift of life insurance that you no longer need can be an easy way for you to provide generous support. You can either transfer a policy that is paid up or has substantial cash value to NYC Outward Bound Schools or designate NYC Outward Bound Schools as a beneficiary of your policy.
  • Retirement Assets: By naming NYC Outward Bound Schools as a beneficiary of your retirement assets (e.g., IRA, 401(k), or other qualified retirement accounts), you may save your estate from paying income and estate taxes on those assets.
