Argenis Apolinario

How did you get involved with NYC Outward Bound Schools?
I was brought in by another advisory board member, Lisa Berg, a friend, colleague, and someone whom I had worked for when I was starting out as a photographer.
Why did you decide to run the half marathon for NYC Outward Bound Schools?
I started running about 10 years ago, but I haven’t ran a half since before the pandemic and have found it challenging to get motivated. I found it a serendipitous opportunity to raise money for a good cause and an excuse to push myself physically and emotionally after two years of the pandemic.

I chose to support NYC Outward Bound because, as a new Advisory Board member, I was eager to find ways to support the community despite the challenges of the pandemic. Running has been a source of positive self image, something I struggled with as a child and teenager.

What motivates you to run and what have you learned from running long distances?
When I was young, I was overweight, not good at sports, and was made fun of because of it. I started running just before I turned 30 because it was a solo activity that didn’t cost money to do and gave me a moment in the day to think and detach from the craziness of life. I worked myself up to a half marathon and eventually did the NYC Marathon in 2013. Running introduced me to a healthier lifestyle but more importantly it help me to accept myself and my body and work through some of the challenges I had with self image as a child.

What do you think will be the most challenging part of running 13.1 miles?
I haven’t ran a race since before COVID, so the challenging part will be the emotion and excitement of running with a group of people.

What music do you like to listen to while you run?
When I run, I listen to wide range of music, Hip-hop, electronic, classic rock, reggae, punk, cumbia, pop, anything with a fast beat. Lately Rock Lobster by the B-52’s get me going when I’m feeling sluggish.

Do you have any tips for people who are interested in running but don’t know where to start?
I would find a place where people go running, a park, a track, the water front and just take a long walk. Feel the energy of other runners and when you’re ready, let your feet take you away.

What are your go-to meals pre and post run?
If I’m being good, a banana, spinach, blueberry, celery, peanut butter, protein smoothie. If I’m being naughty, chicken and waffles, and if I’m feeling homesick, some of my moms rice and beans and empanadas.
