James Baldwin
Chelsea, Manhattan
Founded in 2005, the James Baldwin School is a blended environment, accepting both incoming 9th graders and students who have spent at least one semester at another school who identify our community as a better fit. With small class sizes, individualized postsecondary counseling, and advisory groups that meet three times per week, the James Baldwin School creates a nurturing environment that focuses on the development of the whole person – their strengths, their hopes, interests, curiosity, and their areas for growth.
Operating from a Transformative Justice lens, JBS aims to disrupt systemic racial inequities in education by creating restorative, humanizing, justice-seeking teaching and experiences. It is an inclusive community, where staff and students are welcome as their fullest selves to inhabit all of their intersectionalities. All staff are invited to participate in Fairness and are expected to guide students in living the core values: Respect for Humanity, Diversity, Intellect, and Truth and Commitment to Peace, Justice, and Democracy.

JBS has a literacy-based culture that focuses on extensive reading, writing, and discussion across content areas. As a member of the Consortium, assessment tasks grow out of the work of the classroom and are not imposed on curriculum. A School Without Walls
Lower Manhattan
We designed A School Without Walls with a group of 50 student interns from across the city who helped us re-envision what public school education that centers the voice and agency of students could look like post-pandemic.
Everything we do at A School Without Walls is embedded in a community of care, in the spirit of shared leadership with young people, and with their interests and passions as the core of the curriculum. The spaces we have designed create opportunities for us to practice collaborating with mutual empowerment and wellness at the center of our learning so that we can better uplift joy in our work with young people.
Our schedule is unique with a mix of remote and in person learning which enables students to have flexible schedules for project based, real-world learning and passion projects. Our hybrid schedule means that most days we have only half of the student body in the building, which allows for smaller classes and stronger relationship building. Classes are interdisciplinary and all teachers meet daily for common planning or collaborative decision making. Teachers at A School Without Walls teach in person Monday-Friday.
We achieve student buy-in by collaborating with young people across every thread of our operations, creating community agreements that focus on our core values, some of which include empathy, connectedness and self-awareness. We use circles to share power and build trust across our classrooms, and share/receive 360 feedback with students. We use competency based, narrative grades to provide frequent feedback so that all students feel challenged and supported in their learning. We hold ourselves to high standards of fairness, justice, challenge, and engagement, which we live out through our community agreements and our SWoW Guiding Principles of Harm Reduction, Collectivism, Real World Learning, and Competency Based-Performance Assessment.
