NYC Outward Bound Schools & The Urban Assembly to Co-Host SEL Panel Discussion

Fresh in the minds of most students this fall won’t be Shakespeare or geometry; for many, it will be the cousin they lost to COVID-19, the anxieties of being the child of an essential worker, or the ongoing racial inequities they experience in their communities.

Add to this the myriad challenges associated with blended and remote learning, and there is a great risk that many NYC public school students fall through the cracks.

It will be critical that schools prioritize the social-emotional needs of their students come September. There will be an urgent need for asset-based practices and structures that ensure students are engaged in their learning and feel part of a strong and supportive school community.

To help provide guidance, NYC Outward Bound Schools and The Urban Assembly are partnering to host “SEL and School Reopening in NYC: A Student-Centered Approach,” a free virtual panel discussion on August 5 from 3-4 p.m. EDT.

The panel discussion will underscore the critical importance of weaving SEL work into each school’s reopening plans and will highlight concrete, evidence-based examples of how to do that, equipping attendees with the tools they need to leverage students’ strengths and the strengths of their school community.
